Although i have been playing it for many years, i play 4 different versions of the song, including the note for note, and the acoustic version. Just because, some choose to play it with capo, and a little differently to allow for capo, does not mean they fail. Hell even John plays it in many different ways,

[..YouTube..] I suspect Frusciante was heavily influenced by the BeeGees; chord structure of the D in this chord (barred open C shape) is so prevelant in BeeGees tunes (Be tender with my love, More than a woman, etc.) Practice up those songs, learn how to play Major 7th chords and this stuff will come easy.

Try playing it with a Jaguar. In the video of this song the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist is playing a greenish blue like turquise Jaguar i think….. So play it on a Jaguar, because it is played on a Jaguar not a Stratocaster. That just makes absolutely no sense! lol =)

For example, You don’t see Jimmy Page playing a stratocaster or a telecaster especially, on any of his songs. He plays a Gibson Les Paul. So I mean that the type of guitar you play makes a HUGE difference in the sound you get, some may think not, but it does! Although cheaper brand gibsons will work, such as Epiphone LPs. =)

The stretch took a little while to master, but as with all chords, it does become second nature after a while.
You will also note that as John Frusciante uses a Mustang in this song, with a shorter scale lengh, the stretches are easier. So using this guitar with or without capo is easier.

I think he paced himself about right, although he could have been a little clearer with the way he presented it. If i had been doing it, i would have spent around 10 mins on a little project like this.

I’ve seen atleast 25+ versions on youtube and he just goes straight for the slide in most of them. ALSO u must admit that nomatter how good a guitarist you are it will NEVER sound as good as the album, because the hammer on and pull of is clearly recorded twice (listen carefully), and 2nd he hardley ever does the octives on the dmin and Fmin he just plays single notes to make it smoother.
[..YouTube..] @mpdp85 I have not viewed all the vids on youtube to make that assesment. I have only got a dozen versions, 3 of which i have taken myself, when seeing them live. Twice he did the hammer/pulloff, and one time he did not. The other vids vary a lot, including one i have d/led from youtube, where he throws in a bend, and really changes the intro. I think we both know that it does not matter how it is played, as Frusciante seems to vary not just the intro, but the entire song everytime he plays it..
[..YouTube..] I think it’s a question of personal prefrence to and the hammer/pull off. I prefer to keep it, and as you have demonstrated, you prefer not. So on that point we have to agree to disagree. I originally learned it some 20 years ago from my guitar teacher, and he followed the book. I have chopped and changed it to suit my own style, and play 2 different version, one for acoustic, inwhich i use a lot of open chords(basiclly the acoustic powertab version), and the original version. The intro does feature hybrid piking which you aren’t doing, where Frusciante first hits the D in octaves (x 5 x x 3 x), and then when he plays the F# part of the intro, he starts with hybrid picking F# and C# (2 x x x 2 x). A ‘power chord’ is only ever a 5th chord, sometimes having the octave of the root on top (and in metal, often an octave of the 5th, too). If it’s a root and a major third, it’s a major chord. Just because it’s not a triad doesn’t change that fact.

Although i have been playing it for many years, i play 4 different versions of the song, including the note for note, and the acoustic version. Just because, some choose to play it with capo, and a little differently to allow for capo, does not mean they fail. Hell even John plays it in many different ways,

[..YouTube..] I suspect Frusciante was heavily influenced by the BeeGees; chord structure of the D in this chord (barred open C shape) is so prevelant in BeeGees tunes (Be tender with my love, More than a woman, etc.) Practice up those songs, learn how to play Major 7th chords and this stuff will come easy.

So play it on a Jaguar, because it is played on a Jaguar not a Stratocaster. That just makes absolutely no sense! lol =)

For example, You don’t see Jimmy Page playing a stratocaster or a telecaster especially, on any of his songs. He plays a Gibson Les Paul. So I mean that the type of guitar you play makes a HUGE difference in the sound you get, some may think not, but it does! Although cheaper brand gibsons will work, such as Epiphone LPs. =)

The stretch took a little while to master, but as with all chords, it does become second nature after a while.
You will also note that as John Frusciante uses a Mustang in this song, with a shorter scale lengh, the stretches are easier. So using this guitar with or without capo is easier.

I think he paced himself about right, although he could have been a little clearer with the way he presented it. I’ve seen atleast 25+ versions on youtube and he just goes straight for the slide in most of them. ALSO u must admit that nomatter how good a guitarist you are it will NEVER sound as good as the album, because the hammer on and pull of is clearly recorded twice (listen carefully), and 2nd he hardley ever does the octives on the dmin and Fmin he just plays single notes to make it smoother.

Twice he did the hammer/pulloff, and one time he did not. The other vids vary a lot, including one i have d/led from youtube, where he throws in a bend, and really changes the intro. I think we both know that it does not matter how it is played, as Frusciante seems to vary not just the intro, but the entire song everytime he plays it..

The intro does feature hybrid piking which you aren’t doing, where Frusciante first hits the D in octaves (x 5 x x 3 x), and then when he plays the F# part of the intro, he starts with hybrid picking F# and C# (2 x x x 2 x). A ‘power chord’ is only ever a 5th chord, sometimes having the octave of the root on top (and in metal, often an octave of the 5th, too). If it’s a root and a major third, it’s a major chord. Just because it’s not a triad doesn’t change that fact.
