[..YouTube..] The easiest way I’ve found to get your head around modes is to memorize the number of sharps/flats in each key (good old circle of fifths)and learn where the notes are all over the neck. It becomes very easy to then identify which mode to play based on the chords(in the case of A dorian, just play A with 1 sharp(f#)) without trying to keep track of complicated scale formulas. Most guitar players are hung up on learning patterns and make it harder than it has to be.
[..YouTube..] Ok, good, but I have a question, I understand the mode scale mode and how each scale is unique how play them. but HOW YOU USE A scale for a certain feel. Ok exemple, I want to play a make a solo in “D dorian” , it’s the same note in the key of C . Except that the ROOT is now “D”.. OK, but what it’s suppose to change ?
[..YouTube..] i luv this lesson!!!
i was just having a headache about all the different modes and thought that i have to memorize all the boxes of the modes.
keep those modes coming, dav
[..YouTube..] Ok, now don’t everyone attack me for this, but what happened to the song lessons? You never teach how to play songs anymore, and that’s the reason most of us subscribed to you in the first place, way back when you were still NextLevelGuitar. please, teach us songs again!

you know like the G major scale can you tell me like where they are?
i went to video lessons and chord videos but i didnt find the video on scales so plz help
[..YouTube..] All I have to say is your videos are effing amazing. As a guitar player and musician of 14 years, I can really appreciate the work you do. Guys like you make the guitar what it is. Thank you. =D
[..YouTube..] i dont understand modes. If D is secend degree of mager scale (dorian) and E is therd degree and so on like whats that got to do with anithing!? how do these modes affect the music?do they affect and change the scales pattern wich would affect the chored shape.. how do they work? what do they do? Aniways im a beginer is it poccible to explain this in slow motion …. …ps: can i be in your band hehehe

[..YouTube..] man you’re GREAT!!!!! I’ve search all f’king youtube for a normal explanation of USING modes, not just showing the pattern.. and you showed what to play over Am7-D progresion, and it sounds great thnx you!!!!!!!!

[..YouTube..] Dave quick question. If you have a song in the key of G can u solo off A dorian? or is it the other way around when u play in A dorian u solo with G major?. Or can you only Play A dorian in the key of A. Is it both ways A dorian key shred off of G and in key of G shred off of A dorian? they all relate right?
[..YouTube..] if you play A dorian in the key of G major, you can do that, but it’s not gonna sound ‘dorian’ at all, what you gonna get is major (ionian) sound despite the emphasis on A. what you mentioned above you can play since they are related. but remember that dorian is minor so say if you play in the key of Gm and not Gmaj, you can play G dorian (which is F major scale for the root) to bring out the dorian (santana-ish/scarborough fair feel) the point of using modes is to be able to bring out the moods
[..YouTube..] i’m not dave but hope that helps, btw this lesson is great, but also check out vinnie moore’s modes lesson, he explains in very simple way. for me that lesson was the one that made me understand modes for the first time. but still do check out other lessons as well, they are all great, sometimes people have different ways of approaching and explaining modes. so props to Dave as well for the lessons

[..YouTube..] Lots of tutor books insist on modes being alterations to the scale, that C dorian for instance is some sort of C minor, but as you state really well, C Dorian is about playing a C Major from the D to the D and emphasizing the second degree of the C Major. Thank you Dude!
[..YouTube..] Hey I’ve got a question, When You play uhmm… A, and you wanna sound Dorian, do you have to play a Dorian then, what comes from G or do you have to play B dorian what comes from A
[..YouTube..] first of all you have to know major scale (Ionian), which is the simplest way describe it is: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, (Do), this scale intervals is the most familiar to our ears. use this as a base for understanding modes.
[..YouTube..] if you already understand the pattern of major scale,
you want to play A Dorian, there are two approach to look at it (basically the same thing):
1. play G Major scale, emphasize on the second note (which is A).
or (same thing, different way to look at it)
2. play A Major scale with flat 3rd and flat 7th, that is, flat the third note and the seventh note of the A Major scale
[..YouTube..] If you have a G major chord.. you could use a major scale in a different key than G to get a cool sound. You can choose between G A B C D E or F# because those are the notes of the G major scale or G Ionian. Let´s say you choose to play B Major over a G major chord. To make it work you have to emphasize the G notes so it will sound good so it´s basically B major in the key of G. Because that sounds weird they called it B Phrygian Same goes for all of the modes.
[..YouTube..] so you’re saying that in order to make a solo have that different mode sound i have to see if the chords are major or minor and them like relate them to the modes, like if it’s a “G major” i use a “G mixolidian” or a “G minor” i use a “G dorian” even thought the notes of “G dorian” scale aren’t the same notes of the “G minor” scale, is that it?
[..YouTube..] THANK YOU!!!
what he means by the 4 major chord is the 4th chord of a given key eg:in the key of A the 4th chord is D and in the key of G the 4th chord is C.
[..YouTube..] to think of them as G major, or A dorian is confusing to me (just getting into music theory finally). im only upto thinking of modes as different patterns, just where you play them. playing that “dorian”. playing the dorian pattern off of whatever root. just like you would with chords.
