  9. [..YouTube..] Hi there M8 , great job , n thanks a lot for ur helpful videos , but , but doesnt it sound better with power chords ? 5th fret then 3rd then 1st fret, then A and then A7 .

  10. [..YouTube..] Couldn’t tell you, that’s the way I play it :)

    Posted by ThreeChordGuitar | November 1, 2007, 1:22 am
  11. [..YouTube..] I know that it was late, so hey you are forgiven :-) , but I think you are playing a B flat chord, and not a B as you say. But it is a good test for the student to train his/her ear.

    Posted by lebassplayer | November 1, 2007, 3:29 pm
  12. [..YouTube..] It’s the same for me. I only sing because I have to. Fortunately, all my kids have their mother’s voice talent and I get them in to do the voice over as quick as I can. It makes making music even more enjoyable.

  13. [..YouTube..] Correct… and it’s already been brought up in these comments ;)

  14. [..YouTube..] Greate lesson! very helpful, but I wonder if someone can post the tabs for the B chord, please:)

    Posted by SK8jackeSK8 | November 3, 2007, 9:38 pm
  15. [..YouTube..] for that chord, which is actually a B flat, you’d do a barre chord at the first fret with your index finger, and place your remaining three non-thumb fingers in an “A” chord position… hope this helps :)

  28. [..YouTube..] Hi,
I play the song as well, but I never find the optimal EQ settings. Can you please tell me wich values you use on your HIGH, MID, LOW EQ knobs on your amp and guitar, and wich pickups you use?
    thank you very much!

    Posted by BoukeCools | December 7, 2007, 6:46 pm
  29. [..YouTube..] Very nice tutorial, it really helps getting those details right so you actually get the Dire Straits sound. Also, the singing was actually good! :)

    Posted by 6ixstringed | December 8, 2007, 11:17 am
  30. [..YouTube..] I play through a Dr Z Carmen Ghia amp, so that means no EQ :) Just a “tone” knob, which I usually leave in the 1 o’clock position.

As for the guitar, all the knobs are turned up to full.

  36. [..YouTube..] well, to be honnoust, you do not play a B there (which you say yo do) mate :) that looks more like a Bes…

btw, hope most ppl hear it while playing that a B realy sucks in this song ;)

    just aiming to please ;)

  37. [..YouTube..] Duly noted… and already noted in previous comments on this very site ;) But thanks for bringing it up again.

It is indeed a Bb chord…

    Posted by svekke8709 | January 9, 2008, 3:03 am
  47. [..YouTube..] I Germany you were absolutly right, when you call it a b chord, because the german b is called h and the flattend h then is a b – there is no h flat (or hb).

    Posted by krugie | January 10, 2008, 5:29 pm
  48. [..YouTube..] First of all great lesson.

    And the other:
In Germany the B-Chord would be the right one. One blind monk (somewhen in the dark dark ages) had the supid idea to call your B-note H-note. And the flatted H in Germany is called B (not Hb). Everyone understood? ;-)

So there it is – everything right for Germans ;-)

    Posted by puddin41264 | February 5, 2008, 1:06 am
  69. [..YouTube..] the difference is in the output levels mostly, but also in terms of tones. They’re fine pickups, though on a strat, I personally prefer three golds…

  152. [..YouTube..] Thanks! Hard for me to tell you, but I would look for a used Seagull. Those are great guitars, and their resale value is not all that good for some silly reason, so they make sense for the money you mentioned…

    Posted by ThreeChordGuitar | April 9, 2008, 7:25 pm
  153. [..YouTube..] I would recommend not doing that anymore ;)
But seriously, it’s just a matter of practice. Do whatever comes to you naturally. For me, it was playing without a pick.

    Posted by SmokinAces700 | April 11, 2008, 4:01 am
  155. [..YouTube..] Yes, play as many as you can and try to determine what it is that you like. Especially things like pickup configs, neck sizes and shapes. Look into strats since you’re a Knopfler fan :)

  156. [..YouTube..] great, easy to understand lesson. really helped to learn it quick. in the first few chords though isnt it that a b minor instead of a b? i tried playing the b for quite a while and it didnt sound quite right then i tried the b minor and it seemed to fit better.

  174. [..YouTube..] excellent teacher. Best teaching I’ve seen on youtube, and I’m an ex-professional guitarist. It might help that you get a better angle for the camera up from the body instead of down on the neck though, otherwise, I’m sure that students could learn from you. Clear voice, repetetive demonstrations, diliniation of tone and fret locations, very good.

    Posted by ThreeChordGuitar | August 22, 2008, 5:30 pm
  254. [..YouTube..] For anybody playing with a pick, the drag thing is a technique that you can call sweep picking. For this riff you hold your fingers down how mojo showed you, and then downstrum the top three strings with the pick, lifting your ring and ‘johnny cash’ or middle finger off the strings as your pick touches them, then upstrum the highest note in this sequence which comes after the sweep, the 8th fret of the E string. Hope that helped for pick players. Great vid from a great guitar player

In particular you name the srings (EADGBE) instead of some people who say 4th Fret 2nd String for example. As for the others’ negativity – as you so rightly say they no-one is forcing them to watch!! Keep rockin’ as we say in these parts (Slade Country!) :-)

  316. [..YouTube..] Hey Mojo, actually, to me the original version of “Sultans Of Swing” sounds a bit different especially at the point where you mute the string with your fretting hand and your thumb. I listened to the song over and over again and it sounds like Knopfler actually mutes the string after a very short time, so that you can hear it like it normally would sound for that time. You mute it from beginning to end.

But that’s still very well done. Damn, I’d love to have that Telecaster.

  326. Great video – thanks. I’m a beginner and am having trouble picking up the rhythm – that is, the up-strokes, down-strokes in relation to the chord changes.

I noticed that on another of your videos you focussed on that a bit and I found it very helpful. Without wanting to monopolise your time (just because I’m slow to pick these things up) do you have any tips?

    Many thanks.

  351. [..YouTube..] good lesson

but u go on for like 2 minutes about that stupid sweep that u say is “challenging” (which it isn’t)

and u can just sweep it with a pick

    Posted by lespaulforever5 | December 11, 2008, 2:47 am
  352. [..YouTube..] what is not challenging for you may still be challenging for others. And it’s not a “stupid” sweep – it’s one of Knopfler’s most recognizable stylistic devices. And while you can do it with a pick, it’s not supposed to be played with one. Why be so negative, anyway?

    Posted by ThreeChordGuitar | December 11, 2008, 3:12 am

  371. [..YouTube..] damn keyboard. What i meant to say is “The Chords you’re playing when you start to sing ‘we’re the sultans…’, what is that? It’s hard to see and after it you go into the chorus with a Dm but I’m unsure what that final chord is. Thanks buddy.

  424. [..YouTube..] aside from asthetic differences, a tele usually has 2 single coils in the bridge and neck position, a matser volume and 1 tone pot with a 3 way selector, a stratocaster has 3 single coils bridge middle and neck, master volume tone for middle and tone for neck pickup, you can get these guitars now in any pickup combination you want really, but thats the main differences between the original fender telecasters and stratocasters

  446. [..YouTube..] if you have difficulty picking the sweeps, try using a jazz pick. the small pointy types. it should extend just barely past your index finger…… the guitar you play on doesn’t matter so much, you can still get the tones. my ibanez prestige gets great stat tones, and heavy meatal tones too..

  455. [..YouTube..] You’re comparing advanced fingerpicking to simple plectrum playing.

Sweep or hybrid picking is just as hard, if not harder than fingerpicking.

They are relatively similar in terms of difficulty and both are necessary to play guitar effectively.

Obviously not as good as playing it how Mark Knopfler would play it though.

    Posted by highfuer3 | February 7, 2010, 6:27 am
  461. [..YouTube..] yeah, the tone of the guitar completely changes when you use fingers vs picks. its a warmer sound with fingers. Not that one is “better” or whatever.. just different. BUT the song can be played with a pick and you could maybe roll back on the tone to compensate for the brighter sound you get from a pick. Not the same sure.. but it’d fool a bar full of drunks… who cares, right? Just play and have fun :)

This is really cool, and I certainly appreciate the help.

  621. [..YouTube..] Since I just restarted on guitar after 35 years, I cedrtanily can’t act as an experienced electric gutar player. But I find this guys instruction the best of most I’ve seen. And while I don’t have the most expensive Strato . I do have a 2010 Tele. HH (Mex) and it sounds great. Bet Sultans of Swing will work well with this instrutment. Finger picking!
